Canyon Campground Map at Yellowstone

This guide explains how to read the Canyon Campground map in Yellowstone National Park—how the alphabet loops climb up the hillside from A to L, where restrooms and the dump station are, and how the one-way loops work. It’s intentionally map-only so you can use it alongside the official campground map at check-in.

Canyon Campground Map Overview

The Canyon Campground map shows a tall stack of loops branching off a single main road. Starting near the entrance, you climb up through Loop A, then B, C, D, E, F, the combined Loop H/I, and finally Loop L at the top. Each loop is an oval or teardrop of numbered sites, and small black squares mark restroom locations.

At the bottom of the map you’ll see icons for telephones and a dump station near Loop A. A short service road branches off the main spine between the central loops, used by staff and maintenance vehicles.

How the Loops Stack from A to L

Think of Canyon as a series of shelves going uphill. From bottom to top, the loops are laid out like this:

  • Loop A: First loop after the entrance, next to the dump station and telephone icons, with sites 1–30 or so.
  • Loop B: Just above A, another compact oval with sites in the 30s and 40s range.
  • Loop C: Third loop up, a slightly larger oval with sites roughly 40–70 and a restroom square near the interior.
  • Loop D: Off to the left of the main road, a wider loop with sites running into the 90s and a centrally located restroom.
  • Loop E: A smaller loop tucked between D and F with sites near 100 and its own restroom square.
  • Loop F: Medium-sized loop around site numbers 120–150, positioned on the right side of the main road.
  • Loop H/I: A combined label covering two adjacent loops of sites 150s–210s higher on the hill, with restrooms placed where both loops can share them.
  • Loop L: The topmost loop, a tight oval of sites in the 250s–270s range with restrooms at the inside of the loop.

All loops are one-way. If you miss your site, just keep following the loop until it returns you to the branch off the main road, then try again from the opposite direction if needed.

Facilities & Icons on the Canyon Map

The original Canyon map uses only a few symbols, but they matter:

  • Restrooms (black squares): Each loop has at least one square marking where bathhouses or restrooms are located.
  • Dump station: Shaded symbol at the base of Loop A—use it when arriving or leaving if you’re in an RV.
  • Telephones: Small phone icon near the entrance area at the bottom of the map.
  • Service road: Labeled spur between the middle loops, for staff use; you’ll mainly stay on the main campground road and loop roads.

Since icons are minimal, most of your navigation comes from matching loop letters and reading the site numbers as they climb around each oval.

Choosing Areas on the Map

  • Lower loops (A–C): Shortest drive to the entrance, telephones, and dump station—good if you anticipate leaving early or moving frequently.
  • Middle loops (D–F): A nice balance between access and separation from entrance traffic, with centrally placed restrooms.
  • Upper loops (H/I and L): Furthest up the hill and away from service areas, typically quieter and more tucked into the forest.

These suggestions are based only on the map layout. Once you’re on-site you can adjust for shade, slope, and nearby neighbors.

Canyon Campground Map FAQ

Does the map show all loops and site numbers?
Yes. Loops A, B, C, D, E, F, H/I, and L are labeled, and each campsite number is printed along the loop roads.

Where are the restrooms located?
Black squares in each loop mark restroom buildings, with at least one square per loop and several in the larger loops.

Is the dump station on the map?
Yes. The dump station is placed near the entrance by Loop A, right next to the main road and telephone icon.

What is the “service road” shown between loops?
It’s a labeled spur for maintenance and internal circulation—it helps orient you on the map but you’ll mostly stay on the main campsite loops.
